Flash is extra material that escapes from the intended cavity area. In thermoset molding, flash can be connected to mold shutoff, material flow before curing, vent condition, heating balance, clamp stability, and insert seating.
Because thermoset materials cure in the mold, the team should review flash as a material-process-mold issue, not only as a machine setting issue.
What You May See
- Thin flash at the parting line.
- Extra material around inserts, screws, or terminals.
- Flash that changes after mold cleaning or warm-up.
- Flash appearing together with incomplete fill, burn marks, or removal problems.
Review Points
Start by identifying where the flash appears. If it follows one cavity or one insert position, inspect the mold and fixture first. If it changes across the whole part after startup, review material preparation, mold heating, and process stability.
Important checks include:
- Mold parting-line condition and shutoff surfaces.
- Vent cleanliness and whether residue affects closing.
- Insert seating and foreign material under inserts.
- Material batch, storage, and feeding consistency.
- Mold heating stability and startup procedure.
- Clamping movement and table position confirmation.
Machine Configuration Notes
Machine selection alone cannot remove thermoset flash. However, stable clamping, suitable mold access, and repeatable insert loading can reduce the number of variables in production. Slide table machines may help when operators need better access to load inserts and inspect mold surfaces.
