TPU Material in Vertical Overmolding
Review TPU overmolding projects by checking grade, hardness, substrate interaction, mold design, part removal, surface requirements, and machine configuration notes.
2026-07-12 - 6 min material note - Category: Soft & Flexible Materials
TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, is a flexible thermoplastic material family used where abrasion behavior, flexibility, soft-touch feel, or protective function may matter. It may be discussed for overmolding, footwear components, grips, covers, and flexible functional parts.
For vertical overmolding, TPU review should include the substrate or insert, part geometry, surface requirement, and part removal workflow.

Typical Applications
TPU may be considered for soft grips, protective covers, footwear parts, flexible inserts, seals, and overmolded components. Related application pages include Overmolding and Footwear Components.
Molding Considerations
Review the exact TPU grade, hardness, drying or storage guidance, substrate material, adhesion expectation, gate position, wall thickness, part removal, and surface requirements.
If the TPU must bond to another material, adhesion should be validated with material supplier guidance and application testing. Machine selection cannot replace material-pairing validation.
Machine Configuration Notes
DA Series Standard Vertical Injection Molding Machines are a general starting point for vertical overmolding discussions. Slide table machines may help when substrates are loaded manually or flexible parts need careful removal.
Final machine review should include the TPU grade, substrate, product drawing, mold layout, and production target.
